JEW’S HARP GROUP (FI/EE)
Four musicians taking the jew’s harps seriously, playing the music from everywhere with the instruments from all over the world. A collaboration between two Finnish and two Estonian jew’s harp enthusiasts - Tapani Varis, Petri Prauda, Cätlin Mägi and Juhan Suits - make their instruments ringing in a way you’ve not heard before! Ancient sound brought to 21st century, Jew’s Harp Group experiments the possibilities of jew’s harp, and of several jew’s harps at once.
Members of the Jew’s Harp Group are all well known in the new nordic and baltic folk music scene. Present and previous engagements of individual members include Rootoro, Frigg, Svajta Vatra and Värttinä, just to name few. All Jew’s Harp Group’s musicians have not only studied the instrument for a length of time, but also performed and recorded with it.
Jew’s Harp Group’s purpose is mainly artistic, but not without a pedagogic aspect. Each one of the group is capable of giving a workshop in jew’s harp playing. At the moment three members are teaching music regularly: Petri in Sibelius-Academy’s Folk Music Department, Cätlin in Estonian Tarditional Music Centre and Juhan in Viljandi Culture Academy.
The group has been together since spring 2015 and has performed at Viljandi Folk Festival in July.
